1. Antony Beevor: Stalingrad
Beevor's Stalingrad is the definitive popular history of the battle. He draws on Soviet archives opened after 1991 to reconstruct the siege from both sides. The human cost at every level is made vivid. A remarkable piece of historical writing.
2. Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder
Snyder's focus is the zone between Germany and Russia where mass killing was most concentrated: Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic states. He shows how Nazi and Soviet mass killings overlapped and reinforced each other. Essential for context.
3. Operation Barbarossa by David Stahel
The first of Stahel's meticulous four-volume series on the German invasion of the Soviet Union. He draws on German divisional records to show how the Wehrmacht was already overstretched and failing by the end of 1941. Revisionist and well-sourced.
4. The Second World War by John Keegan
Keegan's single-volume history of the entire war places the Eastern Front in global context. Not focused exclusively on the Eastern Front, but essential for understanding how it fit into the larger conflict.
5. Ivan's War by Catherine Merridale
Merridale wrote this history of the Soviet soldier by interviewing veterans and using their letters and diaries. It is the most humanizing account of Red Army life available in English. Shows the war from the Soviet side without either romanticizing or demonizing.
6. Absolute War by Chris Bellamy
A comprehensive academic history of the Soviet-German war from 1941 to 1945. More detailed than Beevor and covers the full strategic and operational picture. Probably the best single-volume scholarly account in English.
7. The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer
A memoir by an Alsatian who served in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. Harrowing, immediate, and unlike any other personal account of the war. Some historians have questioned specific details, but as a portrait of the Eastern Front experience it is unmatched.
8. Beevor: Berlin: The Downfall 1945
The sequel to Stalingrad, covering the final Soviet offensive and the fall of Berlin. Even grimmer than the first. Beevor does not flinch from the Soviet mass atrocities committed in Germany in these final months.
9. The Battle for Moscow 1941-42 by Albert Seaton
An older account but still the most detailed English-language history of Operation Typhoon and the Soviet counteroffensive. Uses German operational records extensively.
10. Russia's War by Richard Overy
Overy, one of the best historians of the Second World War, covers the Soviet experience of the entire war in a single readable volume. Strong on Stalin's decision-making, the industrial mobilization, and the final offensives.
